Approach to Therapy
Dr. Matt Tanner provides an accepting and affirming therapeutic environment where clients feel supported in exploring their challenges and experiences. He takes an integrative, values-based, and person-centered approach to therapy, emphasizing collaboration, creativity, and authenticity in the therapeutic process.
Grounded in the belief that we are all “fellow travelers,” Dr. Tanner works to develop a deep understanding of each individual while helping clients build greater self-awareness, insight, and meaningful change.
Areas of Focus
Dr. Tanner works with adolescents and adults across a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, mood-related challenges, and life transitions. As a generalist, he supports individuals navigating both everyday stressors and more complex emotional experiences.
He has particular interest in working with clients processing trauma, as well as those exploring issues related to identity, sexuality, and experiences of marginalization.
Background & Training
Dr. Tanner earned his undergraduate degree from Georgia State University and went on to complete both his Master of Science and Doctor of Psychology degrees in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University New England.
During his training, he completed clinical placements at the Memory and Aging Clinic at Butler Hospital, Bradley Hospital’s Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program, and the Rhode Island College Counseling Center. He completed his postdoctoral internship at LUK, Inc., a federally recognized community mental health center in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
